BBR take the Channel Islands by Storm!

The tranquil island of Guernsey was the host for the eclectic blend of touch players from across the Uk known as the Bareback Riders this weekend. The team had some new faces in it: Justin Conway - captain of rivals the London Otters, Noel Forde, Caroline Evans Jones, Larissa Nelson Together with some old heads in Eddie Sanjuan (c), Robbie McKenzie, Mikey Short, Mike Abromovitch, Becks Knights, Emma Black and Anna Rattray. Genevieve, Justin girlfriend, also made the trip and lead cheerleader.

The scene was set with the sunshining and the Barebacks in the same pool as Guernsey's best, Brotown. The BBRs teamed up with Galaxy jersey for the Mens and Womens divisions. This meant that on day one of this two day tournament 7 25 minute games were played. In the mens and mixed divisions all games were won, in the womens division the first game was narrowly lost to local team Touchie Feely. The girls then beat them in the last game of the day.

Spirits were high as the squad left the playing fields to proon ourselves for the ball that night. A quick turn around was required before Guido, our driver, came to take us to the Touch of Colour Ball. Shortly after arriving the BBR began to dominate collecting the best dressed prize and performing at the highest degree with the skipping ropes and a human pyramid. The BBR played nicely with the locals and struck up some good friendships.

Day two started slowly but everyone soon got into their stride once they were alerted that the press would be in attendence. Justin summed up the mood in the camp with this quote from Lucky Jim "Consciousness was upon him before he could get out of the way; not for him the slow, gracious wandering from the halls of sleep, but a summary, forcible ejection. He lay sprawled, too wicked to move, spewed up like a broken spider-crab on the tarry shingle of the morning. The light did him harm, but not as much as looking at things did; he resolved, having done it once, never to move his eyeballs again. A dusty thudding in his head made the scene before him beat like a pulse. His mouth had been used as a latrine by some small creature of the night, and then as its mausoleum. During the night, too, he’d somehow been on a cross-country run and then been expertly beaten up by secret police. He felt bad. "

All three sides made the finals in the end with the girls winning after going down to a drop off. The Galaxy/Bareback men beat the leftables by a couple of scores and then the mixed faced Galaxy Jersey in the final. After playing together throughout the comp it was tough placing against each other. it was a close run game with the BBR edging it by a couple of scores.
