The Bareback Riders is a team comprised of athletes from all over the globe, united by the common goal of success. We are constantly striving to go one step further and spread the word of the BBR.
The Barebacks managed a hat trick of league victories this year with 1o wins from 11 matches. Read on for a season report from our dearest Donald "The Snake" Snodgrass:
The season began way back in April with high hopes for another triumphant march to the league title for the 3rd year running. The management had been busy in the off season with an extensive recruiting process. This is becoming more and more difficult each season as there are a limited number of candidates who possess the all-round abilities that it requires to be a Rider of the Bareback variety. However, despite this 4 new players were unveiled in week 1:
Sam Adderley – a permanently sunny disposition means that Sam is always welcomed on Wednesday evenings. Her main strength is being so nice that the opposition will feel bad about having to touch her.
Melanie Watson – an outstanding first season in terms of effort on the fancy dress side of things bodes well for Mel’s BBR future. Main strength is being short enough to run under the opponents legs.
Karen Macready – with athletic ability running in the family expectations were high for Karen’s debut season and she didn’t disappoint. Her key strength was in seeing space ‘on the pitch’ were others could see none.
David McFarlane – well disguised in a large and frankly fearsome body is this lovable gent who rarely showed his remarkable turn of pace, one for the future! Key strength is his ability to strike fear in the opposition in a non-contact sport.
The first few weeks went by with slightly more effort than is usually required to post regular victories. The win in week 1 was only ensured through a gravity defying last second leap from Keith Alison. However, after a couple of weeks the team got used to playing together and the wins became a bit easier which gave the squad more confidence to go hard on the fancy dress front.
It was around about the middle of the season that word began to spread of the team’s exploits and others wanted to join the success. This led to fan favourites Snodgrass and Tweedie making a belated comeback which offset the loss of Mckenzie to an STD related knee infection.
After a disappointing period on the fancy dress front around weeks 3 and 4 this properly took off with Hats, 80s Aerobics and Alternative Sports in quick succession. This built up to a pleasing finale with Ski Gear and the obligatory Super Hero final week extravaganza. Unfortunately, this was not followed by the usual end of season piss-up due to a lack of commitment from several squad members. Some have partially made up for this by winning some Euro thingy but it’s still just not good enough. However, all have promised to make amends on 6th August!!
The end of season night has a lot to live up to after the high-quality experience that was Barebacks go Derelicte Riding in mid-season. The efforts on the kit front were exceptional all round, particularly from Jo Gregor who was even wearing special pants. At least I assume that’s why she kept showing them to everyone in Fingers?
Over and out.
