The Return of the BBR

This weekend was the first weekend Bareback Riders' Founding Father/Chief Rider and Deputy Chief Rider were both MIA. However, without fail, BBR traditions were held high - arrogance, jagermeister, and boardies all featured at the event. Emma was named as chief rider and more importantly Grant Clark stepped in as official Coin Tosser, ably assisted by Mike "Polly Puppetmaster" Abro.

Unlike last year at Bath, the squad was complete from game one. And while the tournament was stated as 4-2, with all opposition playing with only 2 girls, the Barebacks proudly played 3-3 throughout the day - even through their quarters, semis, and final.

The first pool game was a nice warm up with a confident victory of 6-1. Second pool game was a bit of a challenge ending with a disappointing 0-0 tie with Durka Durka, a welsh club side. Final pool game let us down with an unlucky 3-2 loss against Cambridge Hornets - little did we know this score would come back to haunt us. The pool results put us in 3rd place - dropping us from the Cup to the Bowl competition but placing us in a confident position.

In both the quarter and semi finals we had convincing wins over Thames Valley (3-0) and Bristol Fijians (5-2). As the day came to a close, with just the final to go, and only 10 Barebacks left - we came up against Statue Bro. A team we had encountered in Paris earlier this year but not had a run out against. After a tight game and the potential to go either way, they got a lucky try just before the final whistle, finishing the game at 3-2. We didn't want to a play drop off anyway and blame losing because one of our boys (not naming any names Clarke) got confused and tried to score an American Football touchdown rather than try.

Clare brought along the champagne which was happily drank - and finished off with buffalos by Adam and Ryan. The highlight of the day was the aerobics routine lead by Adam carried out in the middle of the pitch while waiting for our game to start - the crowd loved us! The after party lived up to expectations with various team members not being quite able to make it home, brilliant.

Yet again - BBR mission: accomplished.
