Paris Tournament May 2007

The Bareback Riders have taken it to the French, battling it our for recognition in Europe

Last weekend a troupe of 8 BBRs headed to Gif-Sur-Yvette on the outskirts of Paris to take on teams from all over Europe. 24 teams were entered into the competition including 4 from Scotland, 6 from England, 3 from Wales, 2 from Jersey and a number of teams from Belgium and France.

The BBRs had what appeared to be a reasonable draw for their pool and finished on top after 3 wins. For our quarter final we took on the Meerkats, a team comprised of players from all over Scotland. This was a hard fought game with the BBRs taking the lead twice and allowing the Meerkats back in to the game before scoring a final, winning, score to win 3-2. This came from a late call for a cut by Robbie McKenzie, Eddie Sanjuan promptly reacted and gave the pass Robbie needed to allow him to scythe through the defence and dive in for the win.

As fate would have it our semi final tie was against the Kiwidragons, Sarah Ferrin’s home club and team with whom we have good relations. This was our toughest test so far with the welsh wizard Kieran Hopkins directing play for the taffs. 2-1 down at half time the BBRs clawed back to 3-2 with some great dummy half runs from Eddie Sanjuan to set up scoring opportunities. Sadly due to some miscommunication on the wing we allowed the Dragons to score in the corner as the final hooter went to take the game to a drop off. Hopkins, who had masterminded all the welsh scores, managed to create a mismatch with one of the BBR girls and darted through after a prolonged period of attack once down to 4-a-side. This took them through to the final against the London Otters, the Otters ended as victors after a 3-0 triumph. The BBR then took on the welsh Malarkys for the 3rd/4th playoff and won 4-2.

A strong performance once more from the team in red and a marker laid down for other European teams that the BBR have arrived and mean business. Our next comp beyond Hadrian’s Wall shall be Bath on June 16th.
