The Bareback Riders is a team comprised of athletes from all over the globe, united by the common goal of success. We are constantly striving to go one step further and spread the word of the BBR.
The initial reccy party of Thomson and Sanjuan arrived late Saturday night, an arrival timed perfectly with the final hour of The Bobbin. The weekend boded well from the onsight.
After a few cheeky warm up drinks here, we made our way to the Student Union, a hub of activity most weekends, this one did not disappoint. The Vagetarians also in attendance could not compete with the pace set by JT + ES. Upon the arrival of fellow BBR, Euan 'Pob' Grewar, James 'Jimbo' Bowen and 'Mad' Rab Barrie the team drinks began to flow. Memory gets a touch hazy here. It kicked in again at the chipie as ES was rubbing his leg against a wee geordie man, trying to get some gunk off his leg, nothing lude. Needless to say he didn't take kindly, but the diplomat that is Eddie 'Sanchez' Sanjuan managed to calm the situation down and then bought everybody a Kinder Surprise, a nice touch. When we got backed to our pad, courtesy of N. Light, The Rock beckoned! We all got into our p.j.s, which for Thomson was his gear for the Sunday and for Mad Rab + Sanchez was there going-out gear. Pob was MIA and ugly enough to take care of himself, so we settled in for that tremendous movie.
The Rugby
The previous night's activity was thought to be a great plan at the time, the next day not so great.
A poor start to the day, being drawn against the Vagetarians. The format
of the tournament was not the usual, first game decides Cup or Plate, then
after that pools, semi then final. So being drawn against the Vag was a
mixed blessing.
Our first 1/2 performance lacked the true grit and passion worthy of the
shirts on our backs. Sanjuan's 'I've got Wils, I've got Wils, I've NOT got
Wils' epitomized the lackluster performance. But being the resilient fighters
we are, we rallied together and actually won the 2nd half, sadly the score
finished 32-14. This had been our wake up call.
From then on, nobody else put a point past us; 60-0, 35-0, 31-0, and an
imperious 32-0 in the final against a local side with almost all the native
crowd supporting them. The BBR finished up as Plate Winners. Back of the
net!
Highlights included; Wesley Vasile's entry into the final, the potential in this young lad is astounding. The boys (Shane, Wazza, the rest of you know who you are) taking over the official's tent, a good job well done.
