History of the Bareback Riders

The Bareback Riders began with Eddie Sanjuan and a great idea, during the summer of 2002. Mr. Sanjuan developed his idea slowly at first, while still studying hard during the 3rd yr of his degree, Mechanical Engineering at Edinburgh University. But soon the riders were fast becoming one of the leading representative 7's teams in the country with growing interest from many parties.

In our first year we were runners up at the Kings 7s in Aberdeen, ¼ finalists at Ma Bells in St Andrews and winners of the Scottish Universities Championships in Stirling. A big thanks must go out to our fantastic travelling antipodean support crew.

The team went from strength to strength and in 2004 went one step further and took the title in Aberdeen. Jeremy Thomson, a former player, took on the role of consultant and guided captain Eddie Sanjuan is making some key selection and tactical decisions. The following season, 2005, the team felt a bit of a pinch as a few of the clubs stalwarts had to return to their native countries. It was at this stage that the team began to develop as a touch rugby side – a new era.

Initially the team comprised of the 7s players crossing codes but soon specialised touch players filled their boots. 2006 marked the beginning of the Bareback Riders rise to prominence on the touch circuit. The BBR are now comprised of two sides, an amateur side who compete in the Summer Leagues on a social level and a more professional outfit who tour Europe competing in one day tournaments.

In the 2007 season they collected winners medals in 6 from the 8 tournaments they entered. Success came in every Scottish event and in Bath, they were 3rd in Paris and 5th in London at the UK Cup. Throughout the season team player/manager Eddie Sanjuan had the luxury of being able to draw upon some of Europe's finest touch players with international representatives from Scotland, England and Wales taking part. The Bareback Riders (BBR) are currently the dominant force in Scottish touch and rapidly becoming a known power house in the greater European community.
